Multi-alarm fire guts store
COLLETON COUNTY - Stations 3, 4, 7, 18, 19, 23 and 26 responded to a commercial structure fire at the P and D Grocery Store located at 27499 Lowcountry Hwy in the Town of Smoaks, Sunday morning 6-December at 0420. Engine 18 arrived to find heavy fire conditions inside the structure and the roof at the rear of the building had already collapsed, indicating the fire had been burning for quite some time before it was reported. Recommissioned firetruck honors firefighters 'Past, Present & Future' By Dave Munday of The Post and Courier An old firetruck has come back to life with a new mission. Engine 11, a 1961 Mack C-85 pumper, retired in 1991 after three decades of service in Charleston. It was recommissioned Sunday afternoon -- gleaming with fresh paint and fully reupholstered -- not to fight fires directly but to support those who do. This 1961 Mack, which served the Charleston Fire Department for 30 years, has been restored. Martex Fiber burns in Croft
The Croft Fire Department along with 5 other departments are on the scene of a large fire at the Martex Fibers plant at 2650 Southport Road. It started just before 11 o’clock Monday night. Fire officials say an employee discovered the fire and tried to put it out, but it spread quickly. Firefighters have the flames under control. The Martex Planr makes cotton fibers used in the automobile industry. The fire chief tells us the product is difficult to put out once it burns and the building is not safe to enter. There are no reports of injuries.
2 fires under investigation
Lexington - County FF's responded to 2 mobile home fires; one in the Dixiana and the other in Boiling Springs. The first blaze on Sheraton Lane in the Dixiana community was a well involved vacant mobile home. There was no power to the residence and the fire is considered suspicious. The second was on Platt Springs Road in the Boiling Springs Community. The mobile home was heavily involved on arrival of FF's. Colleton County Fire-Rescue responded to a high speed single car MVC on I-95 at the 61 mile marker southbound, Friday morning at 1033. The elderly North Carolina couple lost control of their vehicle, struck several trees in the median trapping both the driver and front passenger in the wreckage. Engine 26 was on the scene within minutes and began treating the patients. Holmatro rescue tools were used to pop open the passenger door to allow access to the passenger. Colleton has fire at Meadow Creek
Colleton County Fire-Rescue responded to an apartment fire at 156 Kimbrell Street (Meadow Creek Apartments) at 1515 Friday 6-November. Truck 11 arrived within one minute of the dispatch, reporting moderate smoke coming from the building, with a working fire in a downstairs utility room. Engine 26 arrived shortly thereafter, laying a 5 inch supply line and deploying one 1-3/4 handline. Interior crews quickly knocked down the fire which was contained to the utility room.
