Spartanburg – A mother and her 4-year-old son escaped an apartment fire unharmed this morning, thanks in part to a working smoke detector.
City firefighters were called to an apartment at 442 Beacon St. just before 10 a.m. to put out a fire believed to have started in a second floor bedroom. The woman called for help after safely getting herself and her son out of the residence. A 13-year-old child who also lives in the apartment was not home at the time of the fire.
“We’re very lucky, very thankful we had a working smoke detector,” said City Fire Marshal Mike Julazadeh.
Julazadeh said investigators have not yet determined the cause of the fire. No other apartments in the six-unit complex were damaged. The Piedmont Chapter of the American Red Cross is assisting the family.
