The Croft Fire Department along with 5 other departments are on the scene of a large fire at the Martex Fibers plant at 2650 Southport Road.

It started just before 11 o’clock Monday night.

Fire officials say an employee discovered the fire and tried to put it out, but it spread quickly. Firefighters have the flames under control.

The Martex Planr makes cotton fibers used in the automobile industry. The fire chief tells us the product is difficult to put out once it burns and the building is not safe to enter.

There are no reports of injuries.
